Rotorua residents petition for natural burial site

Te Atawhai Aroha Compassionate Communities Rotorua Trust is advocating for a Natural Burial site to be developed in Rotorua.

Over 400 signatures have been collected from Rotorua people who are interested in having a Natural Burial site in Rotorua.

A natural burial is the most environmentally friendly option available in Aotearoa, NZ.

The burial plots are shallow to allow for speedy decomposition and embalming is not allowed. Natural containers such as a shroud, Kopaki (woven harakeke), cardboard or untreated wooden casket are used, and the plot is located with a GPS marker.

Later, a native tree is planted on the grave, which absorbs the nutrients released from the body and eventually all returns to native bush.
